He was raised by devout Rastafari parents and raised in a place called August Town. Sizzla Kalonji is a reggae musician hailing from Jamaica. In 2010 he controversially played a show in Zimbabwe for Robert Mugabe’s birthday party. Sizzla has toured all over the world, playing in various countries. Judgement Yard is open to young artists to record, and Sizzla has owed his high work rate to having a studio at home. He now records at “Judgement Yard” a state of the art studio in August Town, set up at one of his residences. He currently has over 60 albums in his discography, with one receiving a Grammy Nomination in 2014. He was nominated for a MOBO again the following year, and his work rate continued, and has done to present day. Sizzla received his first award nomination, for a MOBO in 1998, and was placed in many critics top album of the year lists. What followed over the next years was an incredible output of recording, with Sizzla often recording more than one album a year. This was a fruitful relationship, and the pair produced many hits, before recording his debut album “Burning Up” in 1996. Before long he started working with legendary dancehall producer Philip "Fatis" Burrell.

His lyrics often touch on this, with songs centering on the topics of drug abuse and disfranchising of black youth.Īfter gaining some early experience touring as an apprentice with the Caveman Hi-Fi Soundsystem, Sizzla recorded his first tracks with Zagalou Records. Whilst growing up amongst the boom of Dancehall, Sizzla decided that music would be a tool to spread Rastafarian teachings and the idea of spirituality in Jamaica. Born in Kingston and raised in August Town, Sizzla was brought up as a strict Rastafarian, and studied mechanical engineering in his youth.
